Study plan

How many hours do you need to study for HKSI Paper 1?

There is no official recommended number of study hours for Paper 1. Instead of a single figure, here is how to estimate your own — and two ready-made plans.

Reviewed 18 July 2026

Why "X hours" answers vary so much

The hours you need depend on your starting point: a compliance professional revising familiar rules needs far less time than someone meeting HK securities regulation for the first time. Whether it is your first attempt, and how comfortable you are with the exam language, matter just as much.

Because of that, the ranges quoted online vary widely and none of them is official. A better approach is to size your own plan against the parts of the syllabus that carry the most marks.

Estimate from the chapter weights

Paper 1 spreads 60 questions unevenly across nine chapters. Put most of your hours into Chapters 4, 5 and 6, keep Chapters 3, 7, 8 and 9 at a steady pace, and treat Chapters 1 and 2 as foundational reading. Our chapter-priority guide has the full allocation.
